Rodney Stuckey took the pass and quickly got into the classic triple-threat position in a 3-on-3 drill at the Pistons practice facility Friday.

He could shoot, pass or put the ball on the floor and try to create.

He faked a right-handed power dribble, stopped, pulled back for an open 15-footer and completely lost the defender.

You just knew the shot was going in.

The second-year combo guard has been working on his shot in the area between the three-point line and the paint.

During his promising rookie season, Stuckey proved he could get to the basket, but to get to the next level he will have to prove he can make that shot.

"I think that's just him maturing in his game," coach Michael Curry said. "I think he realizes he can't always get to the basket.

"We've told him he can't always use strength to get to the basket, although we want him to get into the paint. But when he gets to the point where he can pull up from 12 to 15 feet and he's making those shots like lay-ups, then that's going to elevate his game to another level."

SHOOTING STAR: It wasn't exactly expected, but it wasn't surprising to the Pistons.

The showstopper at the team's public scrimmage Thursday night at Oakland University was Walter Herrmann.

The crowd witnessed a great shooting display from the 6-foot-9 forward from Argentina. Guarded mostly by rookie Walter Sharpe, Herrmann knocked down open jumper after open jumper.

"Lighting it up!" Rasheed Wallace exclaimed. "Herm did good. That's the best I've seen Herm shoot since he's been here."

NOTEBOOK: Curry said Wallace missed the last hour of Friday's three-hour practice with general soreness, but should practice today and be set to play Sunday. ...

Curry has paired Amir Johnson with Wallace in the frontcourt during training camp, so it appears he will get the starting nod Sunday when the team visits Miami for its exhibition opener.
